TeX (/ tɛx /, see below), stylized within the system as TeX, is a typesetting program which was designed and written by computer scientist and Stanford University professor Donald Knuth [2] and first released in 1978.
TeX came along just before the beginnings of the personal computer; although it was developed on one of the last of the "academic" mainframes (the DECsystem ("Edusystem")-10 and -20), it was very quickly ported to some early HP workstations and, as they emerged, the new personal systems.
TeX’s roots date back to the late 1970s and the decades following its creation have seen the development of numerous TeX-based typesetting programs which provide considerable enhancements and additional functionality compared to the original TeX program.

Knuth developed the first version of TeX in 1978 to deal with revisions to his series “the Art of Computer Programming”. The idea proved popular and Knuth produced a second version (in 1982) which is the basis of what we use today.
