History. Emigrants from Kentucky and Tennessee settled near present-day Richardson in the 1840s. Before the Civil War, a small settlement called Breckenridge, located near present-day Richland College, was established. In 1873, the Houston and Texas Central Railway built a depot northwest of Breckenridge.
In the 1840s, settlers from Tennessee, Kentucky, and Missouri began arriving in the Richardson area, which had previously been visited by Native American tribes – Comanches, Wichitas, and Caddos. Several of the earliest families clustered around an area later named Breckinridge.

From a population of 720 in the early 1940s, it had increased to 1,288 by the early 1950s. But ten years later it had swelled to 16,810. When Highway 75 was built in the 1950s, Richardson became a Dallas suburb. The city expanded by annexation and encouraging industry to relocate there.
The 1960s brought more growth to Richardson, partly due to the establishment of the Southwest Center for Advanced Studies in 1961, which became the University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) in 1969. This institution significantly contributed to the city’s educational and economic development.
Richardson was founded in 1873 and was generally situated between present-day Greer and Phillips streets on the north and south, and between Central Expressway and Greenville Avenue on the west and east, although a small segment did lie west of Central Expressway in its present alignment.
