While its origins can be traced back to 1907, it received popular support after joining hands with the nationalist movement. Mahatma Gandhi encouraged Indians to boycott alcohol deeming it a foreign import. The Congress policy of prohibition was formulated in their household under the supervision of Gandhi.
Thanthai Periyar was arrested by the British in 1921 for protesting against toddy shops. Ideologically inspired and involved, Annai Nagammaiyar along with Periyar’s sister Kannamal and other women cadres spearheaded the agitation way forward defying section 144 that prohibits such gatherings.
