This plan was realised in September 1966 when the Blue Coat School became fully comprehensive. It is now a nine form entry voluntary aided comprehensive school admitting 218 boys and girls each year, with a sixth form, the majority of whom go on to Higher Education.
The foundation stone for the school was laid in 1829 and first opened in 1834. The Blue Coat School continues to serve the wider parish, attracting students from all over the Greater Manchester area and beyond helping young people become everything they can be and everything they are meant to be.
By 1975 the school role would increase from 300 to 1050, becoming fully comprehensive, with “a unique opportunity to combine the best in modern educational ideas with the best in modern buildings.”
On 29 March 1728: The first group of 12 Governors were chosen. This sparked a tradition that spans 301 years as today we continue to appoint 12 Governors to ensure the School remains close to our values. In September 1769: The Blue Coat Boy and Girl were erected above the entrance to the School.

Liverpool Blue Coat School for orphaned children. They built a modest building belonging to St Peter’s Church opposite the present Bluecoat (originally spelt as two words, after the school moved out the building is referred to as ‘Bluecoat’). The coats worn by pupils were blue, denoting charity.
