Official website. Data from Statistics Norway. Skien ( Norwegian: [ˈʂêːən] ⓘ) [4] is a municipality in Telemark county, Norway. It is located in the traditional district of Grenland, although historically it belonged to Grenmar /Skiensfjorden, while Grenland referred the Norsjø area and Bø.
Skien is Telemark’s main city, with more than 50,000 inhabitants, and is the starting point of the Telemark Canal. Here you will find a mixture of pedestrian streets, green lungs and monumental buildings, and the waterfront is an important part of the cityscape. The world-famous playwright Henrik Ibsen was born and raised here.
- Go for a walk in the beautiful Brekkeparken. Brekkeparken is a big outdoor park located close to the city center of Skien, and it’s a great place to stop by during the summer.
- Ride a river cruise on the Telemark Canal. The Telemark Canal is a watershed that connects the city of Skien with the inland Telemark, and it has a long tradition of being used for both trade and supplies.
- See the incredible Skien Kirke. The church called Skien Kirke was built back in 1894, and its huge 68 meter high spires can be seen from most of the city.
- Let the children have fun at Eventyrfabrikken. Eventyrfabrikken is a children’s theme park that is filled to the brim with jungle gyms and different play areas.
- Telemark Canal. Nobody had seen anything like this canal that made a big swathe of Telemark County navigable in the second half of the 19th century. A living heritage site, the Telemark Canal is made up of two waterways: The Norsjø–Skien canal, connecting Skien to the Norsjø Lake, and the longer Bandak–Nordsjø Canal which was finished 40 years later and goes all the way to Dalen 133 kilometres to the east.
- Brekkeparken. At the hilltop Brekkeparken right beside down town Skien is an outdoor museum with historic buildings transferred here from across Telemark County.
- Henrik Ibsen Museum. At Venstøp, five kilometres north of Skien you can see where Henrik Ibsen lived from the age of seven to fifteen. At the estate there’s a preserved farmhouse from 1815, a washhouse, barn, quarters for farm workers and storehouse.
- Skien Kirke. Among the largest churches in Norway, the neo-Gothic Skien Kirke was consecrated in 1894 after its predecessor burnt down. The church was built on the assumption that it would become a cathedral, which explains the whopping size.
- Visit Skien Sluse. Located in Telemark Canal, Skien Sluse, or Skien Lock in English, is the primary lock in the canal. It connects Skienselva to Hjellevannet.

Skien, town, southern Norway, on the Skienselva (river). Originally the site of a monastery, the town, founded in 1110, is one of the oldest in Norway. An industrial centre and port, Skien’s lumber and mining concerns began the development of the area in the mid-1600s.
