Rennebu (norrønt Rennabú) er et gammelt bygdenavn. Forleddet er trolig genitiv pluralis av renna f 'renn, ferd, ferdsel', sisteleddet er bú n 'bygd, distrikt'. Betydningen av navnet blir da 'veibygda, ferdselsbygda; bygda med mye gjennomgangstrafikk'.
