The Indian Institute of Information Technology Kottayam (IIIT Kottayam) was established in the year 2015 as one among the IIITs established under the administrative control of the Government of India and later declared as an “Institution of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament enacted in 2017.
In India, Institute of National Importance (INI) is a status that may be conferred on a premier public higher education institution by an act of the Parliament of India for such institutions which, "serve as a pivotal player in developing highly skilled personnel within the specified region of the country or state."
In 2017, IIITK was declared as an Institute of National Importance by IIIT PPP Bill 2017. [ 2 ] IIITK started its functioning in June, 2015 in Amal Jyothi College of Engineering, Kerala as its temporary campus under the mentorship of NIT Calicut.
IIIT Kottayam is a public autonomous engineering institute established in 2015 by the Government of India under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The Ministry of Education has also designated the institute as an Institute of National Importance.
