Messi's skills are better, but Ronaldo is not that bad, although I think, and would expect many to agree that Ronaldo is the better captain (by far). I would personally rather have Ronaldo than Messi in my team.
I think one of the reasons (at least for me) people prefer Messi over Ronaldo is the fact that Messi is more than a goal scorer. I think the more shocking stat should be that Messi is keeping up with Ronaldo's goal stats while not being just a goal scorer. Ronaldo in recent years had become a poacher who could score anywhere in the box.
Also Messi played in the best league in the world with Ronaldo and still bested him. Also Messi scored more goals against big teams in the intl stage due to copa only housing the top 10 teams in SA, while ronaldo can play against luxemborg.
