Ashoka Chakra. Hemant Kamlakar Karkare, AC ( pronunciation ⓘ) (12 December 1954 – 26 November 2008) was the chief of the Mumbai Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS). He was killed in action during the 2008 Mumbai attacks. In 2009, he was posthumously given the Ashoka Chakra, [1] [2] India's highest peacetime gallantry decoration.

Hemant Karkare, who was probing the Malegaon blasts, tracked down the owner of the motorcycle which was used in the attacks. The motorcycle belonged to Sadhvi Pragya Thakur. The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) arrested Sadhvi Pragya Thakur and others in the case, alleging they were part of a Hindu extremist group which carried out the blast.
