Hyderabad State was a princely state under the British Raj in the south-central Deccan region of India with its capital at the city of Hyderabad. It is now divided into the state of Telangana , the Kalyana-Karnataka region of Karnataka , and the Marathwada region of Maharashtra in present-day India .
Telangana is surrounded by Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh in the North, Karnataka in the West and Andhra Pradesh in the South and East directions. Major cities of the State include Hyderabad, Warangal, Nizamabad, Nalgonda, Khammam and Karimnagar.
The name Hyderabad means "Haydar's City" or "Lion City", from haydar 'lion' and ābād 'city', after Caliph Ali Ibn Abi Talib, also known as Haydar because of his lion-like valour in battle. The city was originally called Baghnagar ("city of gardens"), and later acquired the name Hyderabad.
Following the Indian Independence in 1947—the Hyderabad state joined the Union of India in 1948 after a police action. In 1956, the Hyderabad State was dissolved—and its Telugu speaking region Telangana was merged with the Andhra State to form Andhra Pradesh.
Hyderabad is the capital of Telangana and Andhra Pradesh's de jure capital. It has a rich history, culture, and cuisine, and is known as the City of Pearls.
