The Spices Board is the Indian government regulatory and export promotion agency for Indian spices headed by a Chairman, a rank equivalent to Joint Secretary to the Government of India. The board is headquartered in Kochi. Presently, Shri A G Thankappan is the Chairman of Spices Board.
Spices Board is responsible for the overall development of cardamom industry and export promotion of 52 spices listed in the schedule of the Spices Board Act, 1986. The primary function of the Board includes development of small and large cardamom, promotion, development, regulation of export of spices and control on quality of spices for export.
Exporter licence is issued by the Board under Spices Board Act 1986, Spices Board Rules 1987 and the Spices Board (Registration of Exporter) Regulation 1989.
