Mary Kom missed the boat to Rio 2016 but managed to qualify for Tokyo 2020, which was her final appearance at the Summer Games. She was also the first Indian woman to win a gold medal at the Asian Games (in 2014) and at the Commonwealth Games (2018).
Mary Kom returned a year later better prepared to seal her maiden world title with a win over North Korea’s Jang Song-ae in the 45kg category. In doing so, Mary Kom became the first Indian to win a gold medal at the AIBA Women's World Boxing Championships.
