McNairy County is a county located in the U.S. state of Tennessee. As of the 2020 census, the population was 25,866. Its county seat and largest city is Selmer. McNairy County is located along Tennessee's border with the state of Mississippi.
McNairy County Tennessee was established in 1823 with the first County seat in Purdy, Tennessee. In 1896 the County Seat was relocated to its current location in Selmer, TN population 7,000.

McNairy County was originally almost square in miles and Purdy was chosen as the county seat since is was the center of the county. During the years, McNairy County lost it’s square shape and our distinct little shape developed.
McNairy is an unincorporated community in McNairy County, in the U.S. state of Tennessee. History. McNairy had its start when the railroad was extended to that point. A variant name was "McNairy Station". A post office called McNairy Station was established in 1866, the name was change to McNairy in 1882, and the post office closed in 1979.
