Polk County is a county in the U.S. state of Nebraska. As of the 2020 United States Census, the population was 5,214. [1] Its county seat is Osceola. [2] The county was formed in 1856, and was organized in 1870. [3] [4] [5] It was named for President James K. Polk. [6]
History. Members of the Territorial Legislature established a series of county boundaries along the Platte River on January 26, 1856. At that time, Polk County was a part of a larger Butler County.

Between 2021 and 2022 the population of Polk County, NE declined from 5,223 to 5,182, a −0.785% decrease and its median household income grew from $66,486 to $67,695, a 1.82% increase.
At the time Polk County was part of a larger Butler County. Fourteen years later, a special election resulted in the creation of the present day Polk County, named after the 11th president of the United States, James Knox Polk.

Polk County lies north of York County along the Platte River. Osceola, population 800, serves as its county seat and is approximately 20 miles north of York. Nearby Stromsburg is known as the “Swede Capital of Nebraska.”
