Miles of sandy beaches , surrounding dirt roads & trails provide access to boating, wind sailing, 4x4ing, and camping. The lake is a desert terminal water body, one of only about four in the world and one of two in Nevada.
Hawthorne survives as the seat of Mineral County, with recreation and tourism as important industries because of the recreation opportunities at nearby Walker Lake. However, the future of the lake is uncertain as upstream diversions and numerous droughts have caused its waters to recede.

The state legislature created Mineral County in 1911, and designated Hawthorne as its county seat, but the courthouse first served as Esmeralda County's seat of Government until 1907, after which the county moved its offices to Goldfield.
