Smederevo (Serbian Cyrillic: Смедерево, pronounced [smêdereʋo] ⓘ) is a city and the administrative center of the Podunavlje District in eastern Serbia. It is situated on the right bank of the Danube , about 45 kilometres (28 miles) downstream of the Serbian capital, Belgrade .
The Smederevo Fortress (Serbian: Cмeдepeвcκa твpђaвa / Smederevska tvrđava) is a medieval fortified city in Smederevo, Serbia, which was the temporary capital of Serbia in the Middle Ages. It was built between 1427 and 1430 on the order of Despot Đurađ Branković, the ruler of the Serbian Despotate.
- Smederevo Fortress. For a few decades in the 15th century, Smederevo’s gigantic citadel was the capital of Serbia. These were the last years before the Ottoman occupation, when Serbia was squeezed between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Turks.
- Church of St George. Watching over Republic Square is this beautiful church, which is from the 1850s. Come around the north or south side to see the building’s five 12-sided domes in profile.
- Museum of Smederevo. The city’s museum is heaven for history geeks, offering three floors brimming with artefacts. Excavations at the fortress have brought up architectural fragments like a rosette from the long lost church, jewellery, hundreds of coins and a knight’s helmet dating to the 1400s.
- Crkva Uspenja Presvete Bogorodice. In the Old Smederevo Cemetery there’s a marvellous late-medieval monument: The church here is in Serbia’s Moravan style, a type of Byzantine architecture, which flourished in central Serbia from the 14th century.
The city of Smederevo is located in central Serbia, and it is the administrative center of the Podunavski district. It covers an area of 481.5 km and is bordered by the Danube on the north, the Velika Morava on the east, and the Šumadija hills to the south and west.
Aug 12, 2022 · outer fortress ruins and inner city. entry through the outer fortress ruins is free. there is an athletic field within, where many locals come work out. there is then an 'inner city' which you can imagine is a mini fortress within the grounds of the outer fortress ruins. entry here costs 250 RSD.
