In 1972, the Uruguayan rugby team is flying to Chile to play a game. However, the plane from the Uruguayan Air Force with 45 people crashes on the Andes Mountains and after the search party, they are considered dead. Two months after the crash, the 16 survivors are finally rescued. Along the days, the starved survivors decide to eat flesh from the bodies of their comrades to survive.
The film opens with a series of photographs of the Stella Maris College's Old Christians Rugby Team. Carlitos Páez explains that the pictures were taken by his father and points out several members of the team, including himself as a young man, Alex Morales, Felipe Restano, Nando Parrado and the team's Captain Antonio Balbi.
In 1972, a Uruguayan rugby team is on a small plane bound for Chile. While crossing the Andes Mountains, the plane loses power and crashes. The crash splits the plane in two, and as the survivors attempt to come to grips with the situation, they remain convinced that a rescue plane will find them very soon.
