Project Tiger is a wildlife conservation movement initiated in India to protect the endangered tiger. The project was initiated in 1973 by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change of the Government of India. As of March 2024, there are 55 protected areas that have been designated as tiger reserves under the project.
WWF-India was the key NGO partner of NTCA, WII and state forest departments in conducting the comprehensive country-wide tiger estimation exercise in 2018, which revealed a mean tiger population estimate of 2,967 (range 2400-3050).
Another organization involved with the conservation of tigers is the Save the Tiger Fund (STF). The STF was founded in 1995 by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) and focuses on preserving wild tigers.
