Based in Portland, Maine, LibraryThing was developed by Tim Spalding and went live on August 29, 2005, on a freemium subscriber business model, because "it was important to have customers, not an 'audience' we sell to advertisers." They focused instead on making a series of products for academic libraries.

Going to a free service, and a true service it is, represents something we rarely see in our society – a move by a company to forsake profit for the common good. My $25. investment has reaped another benefit- the gladness in my heart that there are still those who care more about benefiting others than enriching themselves.
