  6. Biography. Juan Goytisolo was born in Barcelona in 1931. His father was on the Republican side during the Civil War, while his mother was killed in an attack by Franco’s forces on Barcelona in 1938. His father’s wealth came from his grandfather’s Cuban sugar plantation.
