Shaw University is a private historically black university in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founded on December 1, 1865, Shaw University is the oldest HBCU to begin offering courses in the Southern United States. The school had its origin in the formation of a theological class of freedmen in the Guion Hotel.

Shaw University incorporated in 1875, just ten years after its founding. Groundbreaking Growth. As Shaw grew, the University’s vision for Black higher education expanded, leading to a series of firsts: the first HBCU to welcome women students, and the first to train doctors, pharmacists, and lawyers who could serve their communities.
