Victoria University was an English federal university established by royal charter on 20 April 1880 at Manchester. It was the fifth university founded in England, established as a university for the North of England open to affiliation by colleges such as Owens College, which immediately did so.
The current University of Manchester was formed in 2004 following the merger of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology (UMIST) and the Victoria University of Manchester. [11] [12] This followed a century of the two institutions working closely with one another.
At the outbreak of war in 1914, the two institutions that today form The University of Manchester were separate but closely linked. The Victoria University of Manchester, was based on Oxford Road, primarily in the buildings around the Old Quad.
