Petra ( Arabic: ٱلْبَتْراء, romanized : Al-Batrāʾ; Greek: Πέτρα, "Rock"), originally known to its inhabitants as Raqmu or Raqēmō [3] [4] ( Nabataean: 𐢛𐢚𐢒 or 𐢛𐢚𐢓𐢈 , * Raqēmō ), is a historic and archaeological city in southern Jordan.
Petra, ancient city, center of an Arab kingdom in Hellenistic and Roman times, the ruins of which are in southwest Jordan. The city was built on a terrace, pierced from east to west by the Wadi Musa (the Valley of Moses)—one of the places where, according to tradition, Moses struck a rock and water gushed forth.
Inhabited since prehistoric times, this Nabataean caravan-city, situated between the Red Sea and the Dead Sea, was an important crossroads between Arabia, Egypt and Syria-Phoenicia. Petra is half-built, half-carved into the rock, and is surrounded by mountains riddled with passages and gorges.
