Monastery of St Barnabas in Famagusta, Cyprus. Barnabas ( / ˈbɑːrnəbəs /; Syriac: ܒܪܢܒܐ; Ancient Greek: Βαρνάβας ), born Joseph ( Ἰωσήφ) or Joses ( Ἰωσής ), [1] was according to tradition an early Christian, one of the prominent Christian disciples in Jerusalem. According to Acts 4,36, Barnabas was a Cypriot Jew.
Barnabas was a Levite from Cyprus. His real name was Joseph, but the apostles nicknamed him Barnabas meaning “son of encouragement,” because he loved to encourage others. Barnabas’ name appears 23 times in Acts, and 5 times in the letters of Paul.
