Samuel Goldwyn (/ ˈ ɡ oʊ l d w ɪ n /; born Szmuel Gelbfisz; Yiddish: שמואל געלבפֿיש; August 27, 1882 (claimed but most likely July 1879) – January 31, 1974), also known as Samuel Goldfish, was a Polish-born American film producer and pioneer in the American film industry, who produced Hollywood’s first major-motion picture.

Goldwyn became Hollywood's pre-eminent independent filmmaker producing a body of work, which included 80 films. In 1947, Goldwyn made “The Best Years of Our Lives,” which won the Academy Award for Best Picture and grossed almost $10 million in its opening year, an astronomical sum at the time.
