  1. Ronald George Arthur Chesterman (27 November 1939 – 16 March 2007) was an English musician. He is best known as the original double bass player with the Strawberry Hills Boys, starring Dave Cousins on guitar, dulcimer, banjo and vocals, Tony Hooper on guitar and vocals and Ron himself on double bass.

  3. Berry was replaced by Ron Chesterman in the autumn of 1966. Early the next summer, singer-songwriter Sandy Denny joined the band to make it a four-piece for the first time, with the quartet recording All Our Own Work that July. [4]

    • Lay Down. It would not be fair to the legacy of The Strawbs to not list these next two Strawbs Songs on our top 10 Essential Strawbs songs lists. “Lay Down,” and “Part Of The Union,” are two of the most famous songs the band has ever released.
    • I Only Want My Love To Grow In You. The album Deep Cuts was one of the most popular Strawbs albums ever released in the United States. Much of that success is due to the album’s great single “I Only Want My Love To Grow In You,” The album and single were released in 1976.
  4. Apr 15, 2007 · I am very sorry to have to announce that Ron Chesterman died at 11.15 on Friday 16 March 2007. Originally a local government archivist, Ron came down to London to study for a degree.
