Louie Bellson (born July 6, 1924, Rock Falls, Illinois, U.S.—died February 14, 2009, Los Angeles, California) was an American musician who was one of the most heralded jazz drummers, known for his taste and restraint in displaying his considerable technical skills.
Official Biography. Described by Duke Ellington as “not only the world’s greatest drummer... (but also) the world’s greatest musician,” Louie Bellson had expressed himself on drums since age three. At 15, he pioneered the double bass drum set-up. At 17, he triumphed over 40,000 drummers to win the Gene Krupa drumming contest.
