Howard "Buzz" Feiten II (born November 4, 1948) is an American singer-songwriter, guitarist, session musician, and luthier. He is best known as a lead and rhythm guitarist and for having patented a tuning system for guitars and similar instruments.

May 27, 2011 · Here's an explanation from Buzz Feiten's site. The shelf nut is there to eliminate sharp notes on the first three frets. The suggested way to tune if you don't have a tuner blessed with the Feiten sweetening is to tune every E ( open on 1st string, seventh fret on 2nd string, 9th fret on G string, etc.)
