The Crimson Curtain was the debut feature of film critic Alexandre Astruc, renowned for his theories on auteur cinema, and his coining of the phrase the “camera-pen”. Starring a 20-year-old Anouk Aimée, it is a rewarding experiment in telling a narrative story exclusively through visuals.
The Crimson Curtain (French: Le Rideau cramoisi) is a 1953 French short film directed by Alexandre Astruc. It was screened at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival, but not entered into the competition.
A compact counterpoint of neo-Gothic eroticism with detached narration, Astruc’s elegant miniature elevates the Barbey d’Aurevilly puzzling tale of the19th century liaison between a young officer and a convent girl to the status of authentic fairy tale. The Crimson Curtain 1953 ★★★★. Watched Jun 19 , 2024. The oppressive silence of memories. Astruc seems to multiply the halls, rooms and stairs of this bourgeois dwelling of aristocratic art design, turning the isolated microcosm into a vast and vertiginous labyrinth, while the film feels paradoxically claustrophobic, even asphyxiating.
