Hangmen Also Die! was one of Lang's quartet of war-inspired productions including Man Hunt (1941), Ministry of Fear (1944) and Cloak and Dagger (1946). Though these films have never been considered Lang's best work, their release amidst wartime fervor made them successful contributions to the Hollywood propaganda effort. Ironically enough, before he immigrated to America, Lang had been recruited by the Nazis to make propaganda films in Germany.
Hangmen Also Die is the story of Heydrich's assassination in fictionalized form. It was Bertolt Brecht's only comparatively successful Hollywood project; the money he received allowed him to write "The Visions of Simone Marchand", "Schwyk in the Second World War" and his adaptation of Webster's "The Duchess of Malfi". Hangmen Also Die! tells the story of assassination of Reinhard Heydrich and, perhaps more specifically, the manhunt that followed. It is a highly fictionalised account, but considering that the Nazi Reich Protector of German-occupied Prague and chief architect of the Holocaust was only murdered a year prior to this movie's release and the details of the assassination were still wrapped up by official secrets, I think we can excuse the Hollywood spin on this occasion. ...
