    The Great Fault Arc

Riko and Reg descend through the 3rd Layer, the Great Fault, which features a long, vertical shaft. The trip is made more dangerous by the Madokajack constantly seeking prey. Fortunately, there are plenty of Neritantan who make nests in holes along the shaft. Riko uses them as distractions to draw the predators away. Riko and Reg run into the very same Crimson Splitjaw that Reg saved Riko from previously. Reg recalls Ozen's warning: using the Incinerator causes Reg to pass out within ten minutes, and for two hours afterward, it is impossible to wake him up. This would leave Riko completely unprotected. The two decide to retreat by using a close cave system. In doing so they accidentally stumble into a nest of a Madokajack and with no other choice, due to being in an enclosed space, Reg uses his Incinerator to kill the creature. After he passes out Riko drags him along with her, in order to create more distance between them and the Crimson Splitjaw. During Riko's journey, through the cave system, she gets swallowed by an Amakagame but is able to cut her way out of it by using a small dagger.[Anime only] Riko manages to get to a more open spot, from which she and Reg will be able to descend to the 4th Layer. Moments later, the Crimson Splitjaw shows up again, due to having tracked their scent. Riko gets ready to fight it with the Blaze Reap, but luckily Reg wakes up and, after seeing the situation, leaps forward and hits the Crimson Splitjaw with the Blaze Reap. The Crimson Splitjaw falls off the edge into the shaft, where it is attacked by several Madokajack. Riko and Reg descend to the 4th layer, which consists of a series of platforms filled with hot water. As they travel, Reg becomes aware of something watching them, that also moves when they talk. He thinks it may be a Delver, but not a White Whistle Delver, though he is concerned that he hasn't been able to locate it yet. Suddenly, an Orb Piercer appears behind them.

    Poison and Soul Liberation Arc

Riko warns Reg not to fight back against the Orb Piercer, as they can pierce through even steel. The Orb Piercer fires needles at the two, and Reg grabs Riko, and manages to successfully evade unscathed. Then, the Orb Piercer extends its spikes and rushes at them. Reg and Riko themselves aren't hurt, but the Orb Piercer is able to tear the backpack, and their equipment goes flying out. The Orb Piercer charges at them, and Reg attempts to block it with the Scaled Umbrella, however, the Orb Piercer is able to break through it and the spikes nearly hit Reg. When Reg looks for the Blaze Reap, behind him, Riko's hand was hit by Orb Piercer's poisonous spike and Reg panics. Escape is the only option for Reg, but they can't escape as the Orb Piercer predicts their movements. Reg tries ascending the 4th layer however, that would cause Riko to be inflicted with the curse of the 4th Layer. Riko tells him to ascend regardless, because she doesn't have much time left to live once the poison spreads to far. Reg grants her request and ascends to the 4th layer, with 800-meter altitude. After the ascension, Riko begins to hallucinate, as well as starts bleeding out of every orifice. Reg attempts to wipe the blood from her eyes, but no matter how many times he wipes it, blood keeps gushing out. Riko tells Reg that he will have to cut off her hand or she will die. Riko stops breathing in a midst of this. Reg sobs trying to revive Riko from dying and an unfamiliar voice comes from nearby. The voice instructs Reg to do CPR to Riko. She then begins to breathe, but the person says she will not regain consciousness anytime soon. Together with Reg, they carry Riko to their hideout and fetch some sticks for a splint. Inside the hideout is delving equipment, whistles, pickaxes, and much more. The person remembers they haven't stated their name yet, pulls down their hood, and introduce themself as Nanachi. They also tell Reg they are what Delvers call a Narehate. With Nanachi's help Reg starts to gather the ingredients needed to cure Riko. During the gathering he encounters the Orb Piercer again and, thanks to the help of Nanachi via a communicator, is able to ward it off with a beam from his Incinerator. Nanachi, surprised by the power of it and similarity to Bondrewd's Sparagmos, asks Reg to kill Mitty with it to end her suffering.

    Dreadful Experimentation Flashback Arc

Nanachi was born in the far north region of Sereny, lost their family and home at a young age, and was taken to the Abyss by the infamous White Whistle Delver, Bondrewd, along with many other children. Bondrewd was experimenting with ways to negate the curse of the Abyss, using children as his test subjects. While in the Abyss, Nanachi meets Mitty, another child taken by Bondrewd, and the two became close friends. Eventually, the number of children decreased, until finally Mitty was chosen to be experimented on and was led out by Bondrewd. Worried for Mitty, Nanachi followed, and soon found her trapped in one of two connected capsules. Walking in at that moment, Bondrewd then decided to use the two as test subjects together because of their strong relationship, as previous experiments with humans and animals had not been effective. Nanachi was then forced into the other capsule, lowered to the 6th Layer, and then quickly brought back up. The capsules were designed to transfer the Curse onto only one subject, Mitty, leaving the other potentially unaffected. Both survived and became Narehate as a result, but Nanachi retained their humanity and mind, as the majority of the Curse was transferred to Mitty. Nanachi, in their new Narehate form, continued to work for Bondrewd at Ido Front, helping him to create Cartridges. Unable to bear the horrible experimentation Mitty was subjected to any longer, Nanachi escaped Ido Front with Mitty on their back. The two traveled up to the 4th Layer, where Nanachi found a spot away from the Abyss's vertical shaft where The Force Field was not present, and constructed a hideout there. Nanachi lived peacefully with Mitty in the 4th layer for some time. Sometimes Delvers would pass through the area, and fearing that word of them may get out, Nanachi was careful to not reveal themself, and instead would watch from a safe distance. Occasionally, when a Delver was wounded beyond help, Nanachi would take them in and experiment on them, hoping to find a way to kill Mitty.
