Kamrup Metropolitan district is one of the 35 districts in Assam state in north-eastern India. It was carved out of the erstwhile undivided Kamrup district in 2003 and covers an area equivalent to the area under the jurisdiction of the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority area.

Kamrup Rural district, or simply Kamrup district (Pron: ˈkæmˌrəp or ˈkæmˌru:p), is an administrative district in the state of Assam in India formed by dividing the old Kamrup district into two in the year 2003; other being Kamrup Metropolitan district, named after the region it constitutes.

Kamrup Metro was emerged as a separate district on 3rd February, 2003 after bifurcating from the old Kamrup district. Once upon a time the place was popularly known as Pragjyotishpur meaning the light of the East.
Kamrup Metropolitan is one of the 27 districts in Assam. It was created on 3 February 2003 by bifurcating the erstwhile Kamrup district. But the newly created district Kamrup Metro conducted its first election only during the 12th Assembly Election of Assam 2006.
