And 16% of Indian women reported that they personally had faced discrimination because of their gender in the 12 months before the 2019-2020 survey.
Some Indian women are global leaders and powerful voices in diverse fields but most women and girls in India do not fully enjoy many of their rights due to deeply entrenched patriarchal views, norms, traditions and structures.
Globally, some progress on women’s rights has been achieved. In India, 83.3% of legal frameworks that promote, enforce and monitor gender equality under the SDG indicator, with a focus on violence against women, are in place.
Women constitute half of India’s population, but have not benefitted proportionately from the country's economic prosperity. From across the country have emerged stories of resilient women, coming out of their homes and helping communities with immense strength and courage.
