John Shillito & Co. (commonly known as Shillito's) was Cincinnati's first department store . In 1817 John Shillito (November 1808-September 1879) [1] arrived in Cincinnati (from Greensburg, Pennsylvania ). The nine-year-old lad was soon working for the Cincinnati business Blatchley & Simpson.

Shillito, Burnett & Pullen's business was such that a larger premises on the other side of Main Street between Fourth and Fifth streets was secured in 1833, but even this location was superseded when Shillito bought out his partners in 1837, and renaming the business John Shillito & Company.
The company acquired the John Shillito Company of Cincinnati in 1928 (established in 1830), and a year later, was one of the four founding members of Federated Department Stores (along with Williams Filene's Sons Co. and Abraham & Straus).

In 1857, Shillito, now operating on his own, built a store on Fourth Street, designed by James W. McLaughlin.
