Richard Price (October 12, 1930 – November 25, 1985) was an American Gestalt therapist, co-founder of the Esalen Institute in 1962, and a veteran of the Beat Generation.

Dec 12, 2013 · When Richard Price was a young man, he experienced extreme states for which he was labeled schizophrenic and forcibly ‘treated’ with psychiatric medications, ECT, and insulin shock. He suffered from residual effects from this for the rest of his life.
Richard Price was Co-founder of Esalen Institute with Michael Murphy. From a Chicago family of business men and women, Dick graduated from Stanford University the same year as Michael although the two did not meet at that time.
Esalen Legacy – Richard Price. Autumn 2010 marked 80 years since Dick’s birth and 25 years since his death. His legacy at Esalen Institute is wide ranging. In the first few years, Dick ran the business from his jeans pockets: income into one pocket, expenditures from another, keys to available rooms in a third.
Besides the standard Gestalt exercises that characterized Gestalt therapy, Dick Price widened the approach by incorporating novel techniques from such disciplines as meditation, shamanism, compassion practice, and spiritual contemplation.
