Pieter Cornelis Martijn van den Hoogenband (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈpitɛr vɑn dən ˈɦoːɣə(m)ˌbɑnt]; born 14 March 1978) is a Dutch retired swimmer. He is a triple Olympic champion and former world record holder.
Op de 100 meter vrije slag realiseerde hij eveneens een wereldrecord en won Van den Hoogenband de gouden medaille, waarmee hij de kampioen van 1992 en 1996, Alexander Popov, versloeg. Hij behaalde nog tweemaal brons, op de 50 meter vrij en als slotzwemmer van estafetteploeg op de 4 x 200 meter vrije slag.
Pieter van den Hoogenband is only the fourth swimmer in history to secure gold in the 100m freestyle at two different editions of the Olympic Games, equalling the exploits of Duke Kahanamoku (1912-1920), Johnny Weissmuller (1924-1928) and Alexander Popov (1992-1996).
Pieter van den Hoogenband won three Olympic freestyle gold medals but is also famous for being part of swimming's Race of the Century, the 200m freestyle final at Athens 2004. The Dutchman took silver behind Ian Thorpe, finishing ahead of Michael Phelps with Klete Keller in fourth and Grant Hackett fifth.
After narrowly missing the podium twice in Atlanta, Pieter van den Hoogenband broke through to the top in the next Olympiad. His first international titles came in 1999, when he won six gold medals at the European Championships in Istanbul.
