Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (also called the Darjeeling Zoo) is a 67.56-acre (27.3 ha) zoo in the town of Darjeeling in the Indian state of West Bengal. The zoo was opened in 1958, and an average elevation of 7,000 feet (2,134 m), is the largest high altitude zoo in India.
The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling formerly known as Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling was established on 14th August 1958. The Zoological Park is located at an altitude of 7000 ft (2150 mts.) in Jawahar Parbat (Birchill) on the Northern fringe of Darjeeling Town.
The Snow Leopard Breeding Project at Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Darjeeling is one of the most successful and only breeding programme of the species in South East Asia. The park started work on the captive breeding of this rare species in the year 1983 as a part of a global captive breeding programme.
Since then the zoo is officially known as the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park (PNHZP), but more commonly as Darjeeling Zoo. This zoo which is located at the Birch Hill area (now known as Jawahar Parvat) was established in 1958.

It is the only specialized zoo in the country and is known for its conservation breeding programmes of endangered Eastern Himalayan animal species such as the red panda, snow leopard, and Tibetan wolf.
Housed within its rocky and forested environment are species such as Asiatic black bear, clouded leopard, red panda and Himalayan wolf. The zoo and its snow-leopard breeding centre (closed to the public) are home to the world’s largest captive population of snow leopards (currently 11).
