Kirk Lake is a controlled lake in the hamlet of Mahopac in the town of Carmel in Putnam County, New York. It lies due west and sharply below considerably larger Lake Mahopac. It is one of three controlled lakes in the New York City water supply system 's Croton Watershed. [1]
May 10, 2024 · Home. Attention all fishermen - Northern Pike in Kirk Lake! It has come to our attention that someone has illegally placed Northern Pike into Kirk Lake. If you catch one, PLEASE REMOVE IT. Do not release it back into the lake. Being non-native to our lake, this species is invasive and can cause our native fish populations to decline.
Kirk lake is home to ground hogs, muskrats, raccoons, squirrels, skunks, and bats, among others. Muskrat have been cited as recently as July 2008. Despite the name, they are not to be feared. Muskrats are semi-aquatic and can swim underwater, propelled by their long flat tails and semi-webbed feet for up to 15 minutes on a single breath!
