    James Michael Mathers was born on May 5, 1955, in Los Angeles, California. He is an American cinematographer, producer, director and actor. Mathers began his career in the entertainment industry as a child actor appearing as "Jimmy Mathers" in many films and television series of the 1960s. Behind the lens professional work started after he attended film school and a wide variety of staff and freelance assignments led to a specialization in cinematography and the founding of his own business, "The Migrant FilmWorkers".

    As of February 2020, Mathers has seventy-three cinematographer credits for feature films, television programs and documentaries. He is known for The U.S. vs. John Lennon (2006), The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe (1991), Brake (2012) and 1000 to 1: The Cory Weissman Story (2014).

    Since 2003, James has served as President of the nonprofit educational cooperative, "The Digital Cinema Society" (DCS), which is dedicated to the industry's informed integration of new technology.

    His wife and writing partner is Charlene Mathers. She is Executive Director of The Digital Cinema Society. He is the younger brother of actor Jerry Mathers who starred in the popular 1950s television comedy series, "Leave it to Beaver".
