Elaine Alice Rich is an American computer scientist, known for her textbooks on artificial intelligence and automata theory and for her research on user modeling. She is retired as a distinguished senior lecturer from the University of Texas at Austin.
The theoretical underpinnings of computing form a standard part of almost every computer science curriculum. But the classic treatment of this material isolates it from the myriad ways in which the theory influences the design of modern hardware and software systems. My book was an attempt to change that.

Elaine Rich is Director of the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory at the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC). Formerly on the faculty in computer sciences at the University of Texas, she received her PhD from Carnegie Mellon University.
