The Little Engine That Could is an American folktale (existing in the form of several illustrated children's books and films) that became widely known in the United States after publication in 1930 by Platt & Munk. The story is used to teach children the value of optimism and hard work.
The tale of the plucky little engine that succeeds when others have not even tried has been part of American tradition for over a century. First told in recognizable form as sermon in 1906, it was widespread by 1920 under various titles, including “The Pony Engine” (1910) and “The Little Engine that Could” (1920).
