Gerry Lane is the main protagonist of the 2013 film World War Z, based loosely on the 2006 novel of the same name by Max Brooks. He is a former United Nations investigator who attempts to investigate the cause of a zombie outbreak in order to protect his family and potentially find a cure or way to combat the threat.

He was portrayed by Brad Pitt, who also portrayed David Mills in Se7en, Benjamin Button in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, and Frank Harris in Cool World.

Gerry Lane was an investigator for the United Nations, doing cases all over the world. He eventually met and married his wife Karin, and had two daughters, Rachel and Constance "Connie" Lane. In order to spend more time with his family, he quit his job and settled down in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Some years later, a strange pathogen began spreading throughout the world, turning the host into fast, violent zombies that transfer the pathogen via bites and blood. Gerry was driving his family through the city when a horde of infected attack, causing mass panic and chaos. Gerry manages to commandeer an abandoned RV and drive his family to Newark, New Jersey, where he gets medication for his daughter's asthma and shoots a looter attempting to rape his wife. He is then contacted by his old friend U.N. Deputy Secretary-General Thierry Umutoni, who sends a helicopter to come rescue them. Gerry and his family hide out overnight in an apartment, helped by a family and their young son Tomas. When Gerry tells them to come with them to the helicopter, they refuse and stay behind. A horde of zombies attacks the building, but Gerry and his family manage to escape with Tomas, whose family is infected.

Gerry and his family are brought to a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier off the coast of New York City with other refugees. The United Nations wants to recruit Gerry to investigate the source of the outbreak. Though he initially refuses, his family is threatened to be evicted, leading him to agree to travel to Camp Humphreys in South Korea, where the outbreak is thought to have begun.

Gerry travels with a virologist named Andrew Fassbach to Camp Humphreys. A sudden zombie attack causes Fassbach to trip and fall on his own gun, killing himself. Gerry is rescued by the surviving personnel of the camp, who explain that the infection seemingly came from a Korean soldier who attacked the base doctor, though those with preexisting ailments were not targeted. Gerry is informed that Israel set up a safe zone in Jerusalem, and is instructed to go there. However, upon trying to refuel and board their plane, Gerry's phone rings and attracts the zombies, leading to only Gerry and the pilot escaping alive.

In Jerusalem, Gerry meets Jurgen Warmbrunn, a high-ranking official in Mossad, who explains that they intercepted information about the zombie outbreak early, and began a quarantine as well as built walls to successfully create a sanctuary for the people of the area. However, a group of Muslim refugees begin singing over a microphone, attracting the zombies to climb over the walls. As Jerusalem is overrun, Gerry sees a sick man and boy ignored by the horde. He is escorted bya woman who refers to herself only as "Segen". When she is bit, Gerry quickly amputates her arm, saving her from turning. However, his pilot panics and flies away, causing Gerry and Segen to board a fleeing Belarus Airways airplane as the city is overrun.

Gerry gives Segen medical treatment. He realizes that the zombies will not attack the critically sick, and has Thierry tell the pilots to take them to Cardiff, Wales, where a World Health Organization lab is. A zombie stowaway gets loose, attacking people and spreading infection through the plane. With no other choice, Gerry is forced to throw a grenade and blow up the plane, crashing on the outskirts of Cardiff. Gerry and Segen are the only survivors, though Gerry is impaled and put into a coma. Segen gets him to the W.H.O. lab, where he receives treatment. However, he is unconscious for three days. The Navy, assuming he is dead after no contact, deports his family to a refugee camp in Nova Scotia, Canada.
