The American Film Manufacturing Company, also known as Flying “A” Studios, was an American motion picture production company. In 1915, the formal name was changed to the American Film Company.
The American Film Manufacturing Company began in the fall of 1910. The word manufacturing would be dropped from the title in 1915, reflecting the industry’s awareness that there was more to the new world of moving pictures than mere construction.
The Films. The American Film Manufacturing Company produced over 1,200 titles between the fall of 1910 and the summer of 1921. Beginning with one reelers and split reelers, which usually combined a short comedy with a topical subject, the Flying A would grow along with the industry and evolve to features of five, six or seven reels.
