Emil Grigoryevich Gilels (Russian: Эми́ль Григо́рьевич Ги́лельс; 19 October 1916 – 14 October 1985) was a Soviet pianist. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest pianists of all time.
Born in Odessa in 1916, Gilels made his debut at the age of twelve giving a recital of Beethoven, Chopin, Scarlatti and Schumann which was well received.
