  2. Synthesia was started around 2006 by Nicholas Piegdon, and was originally named "Piano Hero". Hosted as an open-source project on SourceForge , it was released under the MIT license . The program was originally for Windows -only, but after a donation drive in early 2007, it was ported to Mac OS X . [3]

    Advantages

    1. Synthesia is graphically superior to other programs 2. When you load a MIDI, you have better control over tracks, and what they consist of (instruments, etc.) 3. Notes can easily be hidden by using the F5 key. This can be used to alleviate lag under most circumstances.

    Disadvantages

    1. Poorly optimized; Synthesia lags the most out of all MIDI players, so as a result, Synthesia is rarely used for larger MIDIs. 2. Music pieces use way more RAM on Synthesia (excluding 10) than other alternatives (such as Piano From Above), and as a result, some pieces might not open due to the massive RAM usage. 3.     Nicholas planned to add a video editor, called "Synthesia Video Creator", that allows people to record MIDIs without getting lag spikes/stuttering. It's currently under development.
    A fork of Synthesia 0.6.1a for Linux exists, is called Linthesia and has been abandonned since 2010, doesn't work in current linux distributions.
