As one-third of the Folk “supergroup” Cry Cry Cy (with Dar Williams and Lucy Kaplansky), Richard Shindell showed a knack for unearthing anonymous gems.
Jan 1, 2007 · South of Delia's twelve songs are drawn from a wide variety of sources including bona-fide legends (Dylan & Guthrie) and excellent contemporary writers (Josh Ritter & Jeffrey Foucault). Also included are a couple of traditional songs to complete a thoughtful selection of tracks.
On South of Delia Richard Shindell proves that if you dig deeply enough into a particular song you can penetrate to its very core. He creates music that feels like it has always been there and always will be there, eternally.
He also possesses a formidable intelligence, evident in the sprawling literary narratives he writes and sets to ballad-like melodies. It's all intense and demanding, however, and not necessarily for the casual listener. While a very serious recording, South of Delia feels a bit more human-sized.
