Jan 1, 2005 · Edward Gersh was a penniless New York University student when he entered the 1943 Golden Gloves tournament in Madison Square Garden. Fighting as "Eddie Irwin," Gersh won the heavyweight championship, contributing to the long and illustrious heritage of outstanding Jewish prize fighters.

Gersh, Ed. An NYU graduate, Gersh left boxing, after a brief but successful career, to teach in Spanish Harlem. He became a dean at his school, opening a summer camp (West Hills Day Camp in Huntington, New York in 1955 -- it is still in business) and training young fighters.

When Edward Gersh (Steinhardt '43, '50) was a student in the 1940s, it was a scholarship that made NYU a possibility for him. More than sixty years later, Gersh is showing his gratitude by supporting a permanent scholarship to benefit current and future NYU students.
