For two years he tried to get a film made based on it, and had almost given up when he met a Beverly Hills florist and real estate agent called Kenneth McEldowney who agreed to finance the movie by selling his home and his flower shops.

Coincidentally it was at this time that Renoir met Kenneth McEldowney, who had made his fortune as a florist and real estate agent. McEldowney was determined to make a film, prompted by his wife, a publicist for MGM.

When Kenneth McEldowney, a successful florist and real estate agent in Los Angeles, complained to his wife, an MGM publicist, about one of her studio's films, she dared him to do better. So he sold their home and floral shops, and from 1947 to 1951 worked to produce this film.
