Aug 31, 2021 · Sergei Livnev was one of the most exciting voices in Russian filmmaking in the “Wild Nineties” after the fall of the Soviet Union. But after just two features, and a stint as head of the Gorky film studio, he emigrated to America and turned his back on directing.
Sergei Livnev is a Russian writer and director famous for writing the cult classic Assa (1989), as well as his post-Soviet satire Hammer and Sickle (1994).
Director, producer, scriptwriter. Studied in the departments of cinematography (class of V. Yusov) and scriptwriting (class of A. Bizyak) at the Film Institute VGIK. In 1988 the first film based on his script hit the screens: “ASSA” (dir. Sergei Soloviev). He directed two films: “Kiks” (1991) and “Hammer and Sickle” (1994).
