Door X was a significant departure from the expansive Cloud About Mercury, Torn's previous release from 1986. It was a groundbreaking, visionary effort that captured a seamless collaboration between Torn, drummer Bill Bruford, bassist Tony Levin and trumpet player Mark Isham.

Jan 5, 2011 · We then did some tracks on Torn’s follow-up album ‘Door X’, one of which was a decent take on the Hendrix classic ‘Voodoo Chile’. He had just the right indeterminate thing for David’s indeterminate music, but he had of course been a star with the group Japan long before Torn and I got to know him.
Torn began his career with the Ithaca-based jam band Zobo Funn Band in the 1970s, and rose to prominence as a member of The Everyman Band and Jan Garbarek 's quartet in the mid-1980s. He has recorded solo and group recordings for the ECM, Windham Hill, CMP and 75 Ark labels.
